The Machine

February 05, 2018

This was a fun experiment dabbling in a style of music I don’t have a lot of familiarity with. I’m unfamiliar to the point that I don’t even know what the appropriate genre is. Electronic… techno…? In any case, I enjoyed starting with a simple sound playing half notes on a single note, and then just building up from there and seeing where my imagination takes me. Trying to craft a slow satisfying build and then bringing it back down. A beginning, middle, and end.

I had to resist a lot of my usual urges while making this. Top of the list was my urge to make a keyboard part the focal point of the music. Usually I start with a keyboard because I’m most comfortable with that. But I’m trying not to develop any habits or “go-tos” while making music, at least not yet. Trying to stay flexible. I did give in by adding a piano track towards the end, but it was at best an auxiliary part.

Naturally I tried to add a lead synth line at the end as the big payoff of my whole build, and naturally it ruined everything again. I know there must be effective ways of using synth lead lines, I just haven’t discovered them yet. This time I just floated glockenspiel-type bell tones over the top, realizing that “big payoffs” are also not always necessary, and sometimes it’s nice to just simmer along.

Also, when I close my eyes and listen, I think of the inner workings of a machine. shrug.
