One of the hardest things about making instrumental music is giving the finished product a name. I don’t know what it’s called! Usually I start work by just choosing a random patch and plunking on my keyboard until I hear something I like. I have a collection of Reason files on my hard drive with random names that give hardly any indication to the music hidden within. Sometimes I give them names based on whatever object on my desk my eyes land on first. That’s why I have a song called “Ballast Point.” Love that grapefruit sculpin.
I asked my wife what this beat should be called. She thought for a second and said that it sort of sounds like going on a journey. A few more seconds of thought on my part, and “On The Road” is now the official title of this little snatch of music. Maybe it’s because we’ve been watching Lord of the Rings lately. Although this does not sound like a “Lord of the Rings”-esque epic journey. More like cartoon forest animals hand-in-hand, skipping their way to the store to buy milk. In a video game. Either way, I suppose it’s a fitting title for my inaugural share. It’s begun!
